Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Ear surgery (otoplasty) is a surgical procedure aimed at achieving a more harmonious appearance with the face by correcting the angle of the ears relative to the head, shape irregularities, or asymmetries. It is most commonly used to correct 'protruding ears.' Congenital factors or deformities resulting from trauma can also be successfully corrected with this operation.

Otoplasty can be safely performed on both children and adults. Since ear development is generally complete by around age 5–6, the surgery can be performed from that age onward. In school-age children especially, it helps prevent negative experiences such as psychological distress and teasing. In adults, it relieves aesthetic concerns and boosts self-confidence.

The surgery is usually completed under local or general anesthesia in about 1 hour. A small incision behind the ear provides access to the cartilage tissue, and the ears are repositioned more naturally. Because the incisions are hidden behind the ear, scarring is not noticeable. Patients can typically be discharged the same day.

Mild swelling and redness in the ear are normal in the first few days. A bandage or special tape is used to protect the new shape of the ears. Stitches are removed or dissolve on their own within 5–7 days. Children can usually return to school within a week; adults can resume work within a few days. The final ear shape settles within a few months.
