Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure performed to recreate a natural and aesthetic breast shape in women who have had a breast removed or who have developed deformity due to breast cancer. This operation is an important step both for physical appearance and for the psychological healing process. The goal is to restore the patient's natural breast appearance and self-confidence.
Breast repair can be performed in the same session as cancer surgery (immediate reconstruction) or after the treatment process is completed (delayed reconstruction). The method used is determined based on the patient's general health, tissue structure, and personal preferences. The main techniques used include repair with a silicone implant, tissue expander application, or methods using the patient's own tissue (muscle-skin flaps).
Reconstruction performed with a silicone implant provides natural results in a short time when adequate skin and muscle tissue are present. When the patient's own tissue is used (for example, flaps taken from the abdomen or back), a more natural tissue feel and permanence are achieved. In some cases, these two techniques can be combined. Every plan prioritizes both aesthetic balance and the patient's comfort.
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and its duration varies depending on the technique used. Mild pain, tightness, and swelling may occur in the first few weeks; these resolve quickly. The patient usually returns to social life within 7–10 days; suture scars fade over time and a natural appearance is achieved. When necessary, nipple reconstruction and areola pigmentation are completed in a second session.
